We are really excited that this year - for the first time - we are offering our customers Tide Mill Organic Farm turkeys for Thanksgiving.
Raised in Down East Maine, this will undoubtedly be the best turkey you've ever served.
Turkeys are raised by Tide Mill, eating fresh green grass and organic grains, and enjoying fresh air and the notoriously varied coastal weather.
When it’s time to process them, Tide Mill does it right on the farm, which means they do not endure the stress of transport. Not only is that more humane, it results in lower levels of stress hormone in the meat you eat. Tide Mill Organic Farm turkey is always tender and delicious because we treat our turkeys with respect and care.
Less than 3% of turkey farms allow their birds to be raised in open pastures. At Tide their turkeys are free to roam and are the juiciest, best-tasting birds you'll ever try.
FARMER DAN VISITED TIDE MILL ON OCT. 16 TO CHECK IN ON THE TURKEYS. HERE'S HIS REPORT:
I took a ride out to Tide Mill Farm this week to check in on Carly and Aaron and the turkeys they are raising for our customers.
(I’ll be honest - it was kind of like a day off for me. Driving from Charleston to Edmunds there are no interstates and only a few gas stations along the way. And even with that, I took the long way, through Calais and Eastport - so close to Canada that a message popped up on my cellphone that read “Welcome To Canada.” )
By the time I got to Tide Mill Farm, it was after noon.
Aaron was busy feeding the dairy cows and Carly was helping her team package chicken that I was taking back with me.
So I wandered up the hill to check the turkeys by myself.
They were outside - on probably an acre of pasture - over 1,000 of them. Some were sunning, some were drinking, some were eating - it was funny - they all seemed busy. It was like a busy bee hive - all this activity.
When Carly and Aaron joined me out in the turkey pasture we chatted about how different life is for these birds then the factory-farmed crowded conditions that define the environment for most Thanksgiving turkeys.
As Carly told me, Tide Mill believes their environment lets the "turkeys be turkeys." They poke in the soil, climb onto the various structures, and make a lot of noise.
I truly believe - and science supports - the idea that happy (stress-free) cows produce better meat. And I don’t know why the same principle wouldn’t apply to poultry.
The turkeys at Tide Mill are 100% organic. They are outside as much as possible (they go inside at night).
The air up at Tide Mill is clean and salty (the ocean is just ¼ mile away). Aaron (the jokester) told me the fog and salty air give the birds a head start with a brining. :)
What I observed at Tide Mill were turkeys I am proud to sell to my customers. And a turkey I will be happy to serve my family in a few weeks.
Tide Mill Farm raises a limited number of turkeys each year - and we are lucky to have reserved some for Heartstone Farm customers. Limited availability. Turkeys are available for pre-order only.
