We pack and ship your order frozen direct from our farm in Maine. All of our packaging can be composted or recycled (no styrofoam). Until we pack your box, our meat is kept in our freezers (at 0 degrees). We use ice blankets and dry ice to keep your precious meat super cold during its trip to you. Our packing team (our neighbors) like to say they are packing every order like it's going to their "favorite aunt."

Q: What's the best way to defrost ground beef?

Overnight in the refrigerator OR in a bowl of cool water on the counter for 1 hour.

Q: Once defrosted how long will the ground beef be good in the refrigerator?

We recommend you use your ground beef within 2-3 days after it is thawed in your refrigerator.

Q: What about the fat content of the ground beef?

Our ground beef averages 85/15 fat content. But It's important to recognize the difference between fat in grass fed beef and fat in factory-farmed grain-fed beef. Grass fed beef has a lot more omega-3 fatty acids and CLA, which are both linked to health benefits.

Cooking Tips

  • Do not overwork the meat: When forming patties or meatballs, be gentle and avoid overworking the beef. Overworking the meat can cause it to become tough and dry. Use a light touch when forming the beef into shape.
  • Season generously: Our ground beef has a more intense flavor than conventionally raised beef, so seasoning can enhance its natural flavor. Salt and pepper are great basic seasonings, but you can also experiment with other herbs and spices to add depth and complexity to your dishes.

What do we mean by 100% Grass Fed?

Our beef is 100% grass fed and grass finished. That means our cattle only eat grass. No corn, no grain, no animal by products -just grass.

In the growing season, they feed on the pastures of our 500 acre farm. In the winter, they eat the hay (grass) we harvested from our fields in the summer.

Beware of supermarket beef labeled "grass fed." Most factory-farmed, supermarket beef is fed grain (mainly corn) in the last few months before slaughter (even when it’s labeled “grass-fed”). While grain will fatten cattle up quickly, it can also make them sick because grains are not their natural feed.

That's why knowing the farmer who raised your meat is so important.

When we say 100% grass fed we mean 100%.

Some beef processors think of ground beef as though it’s their trash can. They throw all of the scraps, all of the fat into the grinder and that’s it. No wonder ground beef from the supermarket is so fatty and flavorless.

We hold Heartstone Farm ground beef to a higher standard. The beef cuts we use are 14-day dry aged, just like our steaks. We use a precise amount of fat in the mix - so it’s neither too fatty nor too lean.  

The result is ground beef we’re proud to put our name on and happy to serve at home.
